Bulk Waste shall mean any waste that requires additional management due to its bulk or weight and shall include, household furniture, treated lumber, electronics, bicycles, push-type lawn mowers with all oil and gas drained, automotive tires [excluding tires with rims; tires from commercial vehicles, heavy equipment, or industrial vehicles are prohibited; tires shall not exceed twenty (20) inches in diameter and are limited to four (4) per collection] and white goods. Bulk waste does not include any form of matter or debris resulting from tree removal, land clearing, land development, or special waste as defined herein. With the exception of individual items of household furniture and white goods, such service is limited to four (4) cubic yards per pickup.

Wright Yard Waste Facility (Formerly Wright Landfill) located at the corner of North Beal Extension and Percy Coleman Road,  only accepts vegetative debris, wood pallets, wooden crates, small amounts of untreated lumber.

Household Hazardous Waste

In an effort to divert hazardous waste from local landfills and dispose of these items responsibly through recycling and reuse, Okaloosa County accepts a variety of household hazardous wastes. This includes, but is not limited to: paints, pesticides, used oil, oil filters, pool chemicals, batteries, gas, solvents, paint products, tar, automotive chemicals, fluorescent bulbs, smoke alarms, fire extinguishers, computer monitors, etc., and is free of charge to residential customers.

Here's what we do with the hazardous waste we collect from Okaloosa County households.

Car Batteries:

Used batteries are sold to a battery warehouse where both lead and plastic batteries are reclaimed.

Rechargeable Batteries:

We can help you recycle your portable rechargeable batteries as part of Okaloosa County's hazardous waste program. These batteries are commonly found in cordless power tools, cellular and cordless phones, laptop computers, camcorders, digital cameras, and remote-controlled toys. RBRC recycles the following battery chemistries: Nickel Cadmium (Ni-Cd), Nickel Metal Hydride (Ni-MH), Lithium Ion (Li-ion) and Small Sealed Lead* (Pb). Computer Components:

Computer equipment, particularly, old monitors have been declared a hazardous waste by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection. For a link to EPA's "Plug-In To eCycling" Click Here.

Mobile Phone Recycling:

Mobile phones are recycled along with electronics or through a mobile phone recycling company.

Fluorescent Tubes:

Fluorescent tubes and other mercury-containing devices are accepted in an effort to minimize mercury contamination to the environment. Latex Paint:

Latex paint is given away or disposed of through solidification and landfilled.

Oil Based Paint:

This type of paint is a little more complex and needs some special handling. It is poured into 55-gallon drums and sent to a company that blends the flammable oil-based paint with other liquid fuels. Then it is disposed of by burning in specially designed boilers.

Pool Chemicals and Pesticides:

Again we take special precautions with these chemicals. We pack them in 55-gallon drums in their original containers and fill the air spaces with styrofoam balls. These "lab-paks" are sent to special hazardous waste incinerators for disposal. Many of the chemicals are given away. Certain acids/bases are neutralized on-site and sent to the county's Water and Sewer Treatment Plant.

Used Oil, Fuel and Antifreeze:

Old oil, gas and diesel is also burned as a secondary fuel in specially designed boilers. Old antifreeze is neutralized through a special process and sent to a wastewater treatment facility.

County residents can dispose of waste tires, free of charge, at either the South Okaloosa County Transfer Station in Fort Walton Beach or the Baker Landfill. White goods (appliances) also are accepted for free disposal at the South Okaloosa County Transfer Station and the Baker Landfill. Listed below are the hours of operation for both sites.

South Okaloosa County Transfer Station:

    Monday - Friday, 6:00am - 5:00pm, last truck accepted at 4:45pm
    Saturday, 6:00am - 12 noon, last truck accepted at 11:45am

Baker Transfer Station:

    Monday - Friday, 6:00am - 5:00pm, last truck accepted at 4:45pm
    Saturday - 6:00am - 12 Noon, last truck accepted at 11:45am

What do I do with special waste?

Waste Tires 

Waste tires can be disposed of FREE at the South Okaloosa County Transfer Station and the Baker Landfill. This applies only to local households, not businesses. Tire sizes are limited to passenger car and light truck tires. Quantities limited - 5 tires per household/month.

Appliances (White Goods) 

Appliances (white goods) are collected FREE at the following locations:

South Okaloosa County Transfer Station, 630 Transit Way, FWB
Baker Landfill, 1415 Charlie Day Rd., Baker

Quantities limited - 5 appliances/customer per month.

Rubble (Construction Debris) 

Construction and demolition debris can be disposed of in special landfills. A fee is charged at the gate. Call 682-0911 or 682-6611.
